Frequently asked questions

What people ask us on the sideline and in committee meetings. If your question isn't here, write to us at contact@aftermatch.be - we'll answer, and we'll add the answer to this page.

The ritual

What is aftermatch?
After every match, everyone secretly picks the best and the worst player, and says why. At the clubhouse the staff closes the votes and the team reads the ballots aloud, one by one. The match ranking is locked in on the last ballot read.
Who knows who voted for whom?
Nobody on the team. The app never shows who submitted a ballot, and the reading order is drawn at random the moment it is submitted: whoever voted first is not read first. We say secret rather than anonymous, because the link between a ballot and its author does exist in our database - it is simply never shown. And in a group of twelve a turn of phrase is recognisable: the secret holds in front of the screen, not against someone determined to work it out.
Can you vote for yourself?
No. Your own name is removed from both lists when you fill in your ballot - for best and for worst alike.
Who closes the votes, and can it be undone?
Only the team's staff can close the votes and start the count. It cannot be undone: once closed, no further ballot is accepted, not even from someone who turns up late. The confirmation tells you how many ballots will be counted - read that number before you confirm.
Doesn't the "worst player" vote end badly?
It is the question we get most, and it is a fair one. Three things hold it together: the staff leads the reading and decides when it stops, every justification is capped at 500 characters, and the terms of use forbid degrading remarks or anything touching on private life. The vote is secret from the team, not from us: someone who goes too far is not out of reach.

The team

Does a player need an account to receive votes?
No. A player added with a first name and surname appears in the squad and can receive votes from the next match on. An account is only needed to vote, and they can activate it later with the team link. That is what saves you from making eighteen people sign up before the first Sunday.
How does a player join their team?
The staff generates an invitation link and drops it into the team's group chat. It lasts seven days, only one is active at a time, and it can be revoked whenever you want. Everyone signs themselves up: first name, surname, email, password, shirt number.
Who can do what in a team?
Staff add players and matches, fill in the match sheet, close the votes and lead the count. A player votes, follows the ceremony and reads the rankings. One staff member can appoint another, and the app refuses to remove the last one - otherwise nobody could ever close a vote.
A player leaves mid-season - what do we do?
You archive them: they leave the votable squad - they can no longer receive a vote or be credited with a goal in the next match. What they have already scored and the votes they have already received stay in the season rankings. You can bring them back whenever you like. It is not an exclusion - archiving does not yet cut off access to the app; if you need that, write to us at contact@aftermatch.be.
How do player photos work?
Everyone uploads their own from their profile, and nobody uploads someone else's. Your teammates can see it in the app, and it only appears on a shared card when you share your own card - a teammate sharing your MVP gets your shirt number, not your face. You can remove it at any time.

The club

Does creating a team give you rights over the club?
No, and that is deliberate. Creating a team makes you staff of that team, nothing more: teams are attached to the club, they do not run it. A club gets its space by claiming it, and every claim is reviewed by hand.
How does a club get its space?
Someone from the committee files a request on club.aftermatch.be: their role, a number where we can reach them, and two boxes to tick. We then contact the club - not the person asking - on its official address or phone number, and we notify all its members. You are given a response date when you file, and there is no automatic approval.
What does the committee see of our matches?
Numbers, not people: how many teams, squad sizes as a count, the season's matches with their scores and voting status. Never a ballot, never a justification, never a player's email or phone number. Squad names are visible only if that team's staff has delegated full match-sheet entry to the club. One exception, and it is there for all to see: the club-house screen names the players it shows at the bar. It is a notice board, not a file - it displays in the room, it hands the committee no squad list to read elsewhere.
Can the club enter our matches for us?
By default it only enters the result - date, opponent, score, home or away - and sees no names at all. A team's staff can delegate the full match sheet, goals and cards included, team by team and revocable at any time. Either way, the club can never close a vote, lead a count, read a ballot or touch the squad.

Your data

What is stored when I vote?
The match, your account, the two players you pick, your two justifications and a randomly drawn reading order. Nothing else: not your location, not your device, not the time you wrote it. The match-and-voter pair is what guarantees one ballot per person and lets you edit yours until closing.
Who can read what I wrote?
Your teammates, in the match retrospective, without knowing who wrote what. Neither your club's committee, nor another team, nor another club can reach it: every screen is loaded through your membership, and what is not yours does not exist. On our side, the admin console refuses to display the contents of a ballot.
I was voted worst player. Who sees that, and for how long?
Your teammates, in the match retrospective, together with the justification that goes with it. Today there is no automatic purge: it stays as long as the match does. If a justification goes too far, write to us at contact@aftermatch.be and we handle it by hand - this is the part we still have to improve, and we would rather write it here than let you find out.
How do I get my data deleted?
There is no "delete my account" button yet: you ask by email and we handle it by hand. A player named in an already-counted ballot or in a recorded goal cannot be erased without breaking the season rankings - in that case we anonymise, which comes to the same thing for you. Your photo, though, you remove yourself from your profile, at any time.

Network and installation

Does it work without a network?
Your ballot is written on your phone before it is sent. If the network drops as you confirm, it goes out on its own the moment you reconnect: it is not lost and it is not duplicated. The app also opens offline and shows you the last known state - dashboard, squad, rankings.
What if the clubhouse has no signal?
That is where it pinches, and it is better to know beforehand. Closing, reading the ballots and the ranking all go through the server, and the screen refreshes live for the whole team. A bar with no coverage can vote, but it cannot count: bring a hotspot for the phone leading the reading.
How do I install aftermatch on my phone?
Open aftermatch in your browser and add it to your home screen: on Android, "Install app" in the menu; on iPhone, Share then "Add to Home Screen". The app will not prompt you - you have to do it yourself. There is nothing to download from the App Store or Google Play.
What notifications do you send?
One reminder on match day, one follow-up the next day, and nothing more once you have voted or the votes are closed. That is all: we do not write to you for anything else. On iPhone you first have to add aftermatch to your home screen - iOS does not allow notifications otherwise.

Money

What does it cost a team?
Nothing. Everything a team does is free for good: voting, closing, counting, filling in the match sheet, checking the whole season and its rankings, sharing its cards. A club's plan never restricts its teams - it is the club that takes a plan, not the team.
What exactly are the three plans?
Per club, per season, VAT included: Discovery €0, Club €190, Club Sponsors €490. On all three, teams get the same app: the whole ritual, the full season and its rankings. Club opens the club's own space - its page in its own colours, its logo, team administration, and the club-house screen announced for this season. Club Sponsors adds the slots themselves: the club's partners are the ones on display, in the app and on shared cards.
Why is there still advertising on the Club plan?
Because the Club plan does not buy silence: it buys the club's own space, its page in its own colours, and the club-house screen announced for this season. The advertising slot itself already exists on Discovery and shows Oak Eye - it is Club Sponsors that hands it over to you. The club then keeps 100% of what it sells to its partners.
And if we stop paying?
You drop back to Discovery, and nothing is deleted. Teams lose nothing: they carry on voting, counting, recording and checking their rankings. What stops is the club space in its own colours and what it opens, and they come back the day the club takes a plan again. There is no forced automatic renewal: an invoice, a reminder, and your committee decides.
How do we pay?
Invoice to the club and bank transfer - that is the reality of a non-profit. The billing season runs from 1 September to 31 August; subscribing after 1 January is half price for the rest of the season, and the first month of a paid plan is free. Nothing is paid online today.

The old app

Do we lose our history when we switch?
No. When your club switches over, we bring across the accounts, teams, squads, matches and every ballot already counted: the season rankings start again with their history intact. The old database is never modified during the operation - it stays exactly as it is, which is what makes the switch reversible.
Do we have to create a new account?
No: same email, same password. Accounts that were never activated arrive as squad entries - the player is votable straight away and activates their account with the team link.
Why rebuild everything?
Because the old app let one team see another team's data, and that is not something you patch at the edges. The new one loads every screen through your membership: if you are not a member, the resource does not exist, and that is covered by tests on every release. It also brings offline voting, reminders and the three languages.
